August 2008
President's Letter:
Fellow Lions,
It’s a new year for the Farmville Lion’s Club and that means a new set of goals. Following are the “New Year’s Resolutions” for our club:
Ø Increase average attendance at regular meetings by 10%.
Ø Add 8 new members and initiate a call program to improve attendance and retention of existing members.
Ø Fundraising goal of $17,500.
Ø Collect 1,300 pair of glasses and 15 hearing aids.
These goals are absolutely attainable and I know we will have a successful year as we work together in service to our community.
I would like to thank Tom Hill for chairing the Fireworks After Dark fundraising event on 7/3. This event has been a great success for the Farmville Lions Club - we have sold out of funnel cakes now two years in a row! We had ten of our Lions present at the event and they WORKED. Many of our volunteers served from 5-10 pm as they sold to a crowd that stood in line for our delicious funnel cakes. Sadly, we had to turn away sales, but I am confident that next year we will call upon our club to increase the number of volunteers so we can raise the number of people we can serve in this well received fundraising event. Thanks again to all those who participated. WELL DONE!
If you haven’t joined us at a meeting for a while you are missing a real treat. Not only is it the best lunch you will have all week, but our Program Chair, Kerry Mossler has done a fantastic job securing a diverse and interesting group of speakers. Kerry, I have heard many compliments on the programs. Thanks for keeping our meetings interesting and informative.
I look forward to seeing you all at our August meetings.
Lion President LeAnne
Award presented to Lion William Hendley:
Lion William Hendley was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award at the July 15 regular Lions meeting. The award is recognition of a commitment to humanitarian work. Congratulations to Lion William!
Campaign Sight First II
With $26,000 raised, the Farmville Lions Club is very close to reaching our goal of $32,000. We are extending our local campaign until August 30 in hope of attaining this goal. So please consider making a contribution if you haven’t already given, or increase your pledge to help us reach this goal. Remember - just $6 will save the sight of one person. Please send your check, made out to Farmville Lions Club – CSFII, to Lion Tom Hill, Hill and Davis, 1610 Graham Road, Farmville, VA, 23901. THANK YOU!
Parking at Longwood for Lions Meetings
We now have parking available in the Brock Commons Garage at Longwood for our regular Lions meetings, replacing the shuttle bus service. We have a limited number of spots reserved (twenty), so please carpool – arrange to pick up a fellow Lion or two on your way to the meeting!
To reach the garage, turn off Main St. on to Redford St. across from McDonald's restaurant. Redford will dead end at the garage entrance. The access code to the garage will be noted each month in the Calendar. The pound symbol is part of the code and must be pressed on the keypad following the numbers in order for the gate arm to lift. The keypad is located at the entrance to the garage and is easily reached from the car window. Please park in spaces along the back wall designated “Visitor”. Handicap parking is located directly to the right after entering the facility.
